6 [EXCITING] Things to Do on a Snow Day in Arkansas that you’ll love

We don’t get a lot of snow in Arkansas. In fact, I’m writing this on February 11th and we just got a little white on the ground overnight. It’s still early in the morning and dark outside so I haven’t been out to see if it’s snow or mainly ice.

In Arkansas, it’s usually ice and you can’t build a snowman with ice.

This is the kind of day we hope for all winter. My kids start talking about snow on December 1st but I always tell them not to get their hopes up. Arkansas winters are unpredictable.

There have been plenty of Christmases when we have worn t-shirts because it’s warm and muggy outside. Then, there have been Christmases that were immediately followed with an ice storm and power outages.

You just never know.

Since we hope and plan for snow all winter, we are experts at knowing just what to do with it when it gets here.

[EXCITING] Things to Do on a Snow Day in Arkansas That Will Put a Smile on Your Face

Make Chocolate Peanut Clusters

Snow days are so rare in Arkansas. Back in 2010, our weatherman kept predicting snow in the forecast but the chances of it would diminish before the day came.

Finally, the weatherman predicted snow one more time and I told my husband that if it did actually snow, I would make chocolate peanut clusters to celebrate.

Well, it snowed.

In fact, it snowed about 4 more times after that.

We were up to our eyeballs in chocolate peanut clusters, but it was the start of a fun tradition! A good snow day is so rare in Arkansas that this isn’t a tradition that will upset your diet goals too much either.

Make Snow Ice Cream

Ok, here is another food related suggestion but you’ve got to grab life by the horns, right?

I don’t know when I first heard of snow ice cream but I’m sure it was from someone who didn’t live in a Southern state. Snow Ice Cream basically consists of snow, sugar, and vanilla.

The advice everyone gives is to not make snow ice cream with the first snow of the season. I’m not sure of the reasoning behind this except that it probably has to do with pollution in the air.

You can make your own judgements here, but my husband and I decided that it was nonsense. We got snow today after a day of rain yesterday. We think the atmosphere is as clean as it’s going to get.

Besides, in Arkansas, we can’t afford to wait until the second snow!

We simply scrape the one-inch layer off the hood of the truck and try to avoid the stuck-on bugs.

If you’re from the South, you know what I mean. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Sounds delicious, doesn’t it?

Make a Tiny Snowman

The last time we had enough snow to make a snowman was about 4 years ago. We had to scrape the tiny layer of snow off our concrete driveway and form it into balls.

Our snowman was about 6 inches tall, but we were so proud of it!

When a snow day comes in Arkansas, don’t miss the opportunity to make a snowman even if he’ll be tiny. It’s still worth it!

Watch a Movie

Around my house, we don’t watch a lot of TV so the rare snow day is a fun time to cuddle on the couch and watch a movie.

For a real treat, we like to watch the “Blustery Day” Winnie the Pooh short. It’s sweet, fun, and makes us feel cozy.

Make Real Hot Chocolate

Put away those packages of hot chocolate mix! An Arkansas snow day calls for something extra special.

Real hot chocolate means you must turn on your stove, but it will be worth it.

Now, I choose to make mine with cocoa powder, but some people will argue that it’s not real unless you melt actual chocolate.

Do what you want here. I’m sticking with the cocoa powder.

For our family of five, I make it like this:
5 cups whole milk
3 Tablespoons cocoa powder
3 Tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla

You can adjust it how you want.

Make Pine Cone Bird Feeders

In Arkansas, our feathered friends love a good bird feeder. Bird watching is a favorite hobby for many Arkansans.

At our house, we have finches, nuthatches, woodpeckers, and all sorts of birds that love our woods.

So, on that one snow day a year, don’t forget to do something a little special for the birds.

A fun project for Arkansans of all ages is to make a pine cone bird feeder. It’s amazingly simple and a lot of fun.

Debbie from One Little Project will tell you everything you need to know! Check it out here.
