Tornadoes are a frequent and often devastating natural disaster in the state of Arkansas, where residents are well aware of these dangerous storms. Unfortunately, many of us have had first-hand tornado experience.

Public Tornado Shelters in Arkansas
In response to this persistent threat, public tornado shelters have become a vital resource for safeguarding lives during severe weather events. These shelters, strategically located throughout the state, provide a safe haven for individuals and families seeking refuge from the violent winds and flying debris associated with tornadoes.
Keep in mind that each tornado shelter has different rules. Call ahead to make sure the shelter is open and verify the rules (i.e. Are pets allowed?).

Creating a Tornado Emergency Bag
Creating an emergency bag for severe weather preparedness is an essential step in ensuring that you and your family are ready to face any unexpected disaster, such as a tornado or severe storm.
Key essentials include non-perishable food and water, a first aid kit, flashlights with extra batteries, a battery-powered weather radio, and important documents (such as IDs and insurance papers) in waterproof bags.
It’s also wise to include a change of clothes, personal hygiene items, blankets, and a phone charger. Don’t forget medications, baby supplies, or pet food if applicable.
Tailoring the bag to the specific needs of your household will give you peace of mind, knowing that you’re prepared for whatever severe weather may come your way.

These are things we put in our safe room as soon as severe weather is predicted.
Watch vs Warning
I have lived in Arkansas my entire life and I still can’t get this right.
A tornado watch and a tornado warning are both important weather alerts, but they indicate different levels of threat and action.
A tornado watch is issued when conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes in an area. This means that the atmosphere is unstable, and tornadoes are possible, but not imminent. During a tornado watch, it’s important to stay alert and monitor weather updates, as tornadoes can develop quickly. It’s a time to prepare and be ready to act if the situation changes.

A tornado warning, on the other hand, is much more urgent. It is issued when a tornado has been spotted in the area or indicated by radar. A tornado warning means that a tornado is either imminent or already occurring, and immediate action is required to protect yourself. During a warning, you should seek shelter in a sturdy building, preferably in a basement or interior room away from windows. If you’re in a mobile home or outside, seek a more secure location immediately. Understanding the difference between a watch and a warning is critical for your safety during tornado season.
