If hike-in (primitive) camping is your thing, Mount Nebo State Park has you covered!
I contacted the Park to get details about their hike-in/primitive campsites and here is their response:
“Yes, we offer primitive hike in camping. We have 10 hike-in sites along our 4-mile Bench trail. The first one is about a half-mile hike in. They are $14 a night with no hookups. The site includes a charcoal grill and a picnic table. They are first come first serve, so you will have to come by our Visitor Center to reserve one. We are open 7 days a week from 8 AM-5 PM.” -Mount Nebo State Park
Many people love primitive hike-in camping because it offers the opportunity to get away from other campers. The hike-in campsites on Mount Nebo aren’t as “primitive” as other campsites in Arkansas because they have charcoal grills and picnic tables. However, you can still get that remote, under-the-stars feeling even if you flip burgers on the grill for lunch!
The Mount Nebo Bench Trail has also been named one of our FAVORITE Arkansas Hikes with Kids!
There is a narrow shelf called a bench that encircles the entire mountain. In the early 1900s, this bench featured a road. Today the bench is a trail route through a woodland that teems with large trees and wildlife. Fern Lake, remnants of historic springs, and steps that were a part of an early resort development are still visible.

“This is a good trail to help kids along their way to being excellent hikers. A stroller can be used on this trail if it has large wheels (bicycle style). This makes it a good trail for a variety of age ranges.” –Trove1
The campground on Mt. Nebo was also named one of the BEST campgrounds in Arkansas with waterfalls.
“Situated in the Arkansas River Valley just 45 minutes from Arkansas Wine Country, this state park sits atop the 1,350-foot Mount Nebo. The 1930s-era Civilian Conservation Corps constructed many of the rustic-style cabins, pavilions, bridges, and 14 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails.
There are 34 campsites (24 Class B and 10 hike-in tent sites). Other facilities include a swimming pool, tennis courts, picnic areas, pavilions, and visitor center with gift shop.” Arkansas State Parks
