I love to picnic. It’s fun to pack the ice chest and enjoy a picnic lunch at a great spot with my kids.
Also, taking three kids to a restaurant can be very expensive so my wallet smiles when I picnic!
A great picnic starts with the food you pack. When it comes to picnicking, my son is a bottomless pit. I’ve never seen a 5 year-old put away so much food.
I usually pack turkey sandwiches on homemade bread, mozzarella cheese sticks, apple sauce cups, mandarin oranges, pretzels, cheese & crackers, and chips.
Recently, I even introduced my kids to pork rinds. They were a huge hit. My husband cannot believe I like pork rinds. I’m not much of a meat eater and he says the bag wreaks of pigs. But, I can’t help it. There is something about pork rinds that I like!
Please tell me I’m not alone.
If you like pork rinds too, pack them up and head out for a picnic in Heber Springs!
Best Places in Heber Springs to Picnic
One of my favorite places to picnic in Arkansas is in Heber Springs. I love that town! The views are amazing and the people are friendly.
Unbeatable Picnic Spots at the Dam Site
Last weekend, we were camping at the Dam Site Campground and found ourselves on an accidental 2 mile walk. The rain had finally let up and we were restless.
We set out from our woodsy campsite to find the lake. Once we found it, we kept going. We stumbled on the Dam Site Marina (which is beautiful, by the way) then I decided that I wanted to find the cliffs I used to jump off of as a kid.
I could see the cliffs but I couldn’t remember how to get there. This led to an hour of wandering and sometimes carrying the stroller through grass and mud when we found “shortcuts.”
After a very long walk, we finally found the cliff and the ultimate picnicking spot at the Dam Site!
You have to pay $5 to enter this recreation area but it’s worth every dollar.

Beautiful Picnic Spots on the Little Red River
Another favorite picnic area of mine is at the JFK Campground and Recreation Area on the Little Red River.
There are multiple concrete picnic tables along the river where you can enjoy your lunch and watch anglers fly fish.
And, if you’re lucky, you’ll hear the horn sound at the Dam and get to watch the cold water of the Little Red River rise before your eyes.
You also have to pay $5 to use this recreation area but you won’t regret it!
While you’re in the area, don’t miss the Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery!
